Other Inspiration

This house in Israel has been shaped around the rocky landscape. From the interior looking outside one is confronted with the bare rock face. This is very similar to the objectives of my Holman House re-interpretational architecture.

The house can be found at:

natural pathways within cliffs to approach the space

my re-evaluated architecture aims to follow this theory
unnatural, planned, aesthetic minded approach to cliff stairs.

Research and Inspiration

Whilst researching ways to best approach my design re-evaluation for "the Holman house" I came across another interesting architectural project which follows very similar design methods and aims.

The Cliff House in Nevada, USA by architect Mark Dziewulski

The site is a dramatically steep slope with steps leading down to the shore of Lake Tahoe, one hundred and fifty feet below. It has sweeping panoramic views of the entire lake and mountains beyond. Entry from the road is from the top of the slope and zoning required the house to be below this level.

Program

The owner wanted a year-round house that took full advantage of the dramatic site and views. It had to be suitable for entertaining large groups but had also to provide intimacy for the private areas: the master suite and guest bedrooms. Cantilevered floors were needed to maintain the ground coverage limitations. Due to the slope and setbacks the house was organized vertically on five levels.

Design

The house provides a tranquil environment from which to enjoy the lake and experience the magnificent display of nature. The main mass is largely concealed from the street and its fragmented form, cut deep into the steep slope, reflects the geometry of rocky terrain around.

The main view of the house from the road is of the entrance and roofs below. In effect, the roof forms themselves become the main façade element on this side. They express the volumes of the rooms below and are designed as series of layered sculptural curves. They are fanned out towards the lake and create a kind of man-made rolling landscape that underlines the view of the lake and mountains beyond. The principle ordering element of the house is the strong form of the stair tower which descends from this level through the entire house. The main spaces are all anchored off this element -- their forms reflecting their individual needs, orientation and view. The layout of the house is clearly readable in its main levels: arrival, entertainment, master suite and guest floor.

Since the stair is the main circulation for such a vertical house it was designed to frame a narrow foretaste of the view and to provide a dramatic journey to the main level, where the full glory of the view is exposed. The treads are glass and clear span between the walls and a single helical stringer, creating a floating sculptural form.
The circular glass elevator frames the constantly changing views through to the lake as one descends. The main entertainment level has its different functions expressed as distinct volumes which are angled to optimize their individual orientation. This also finds expression in the façade. The master bedroom has its own cantilevered form and is angled to look down the lake towards the mountains.

The main floors overlook the lake with an expanse of glass, which is shaded with large overhangs and angled forwards to reduce sun reflection back to the lake.
The forms are fragmented in response to the rocky context of the hillside and to create deep shadows and minimize flat expanses. The finish materials are dark and non-reflective. All of these measures were very important to protect the views back from the lake. In scenic analysis tests the house blends in and almost become part of the rocky hillside.

In essence the house is a sculpture nestling into the cliff face and looking out to the lake.

Presentation Techniques

Whilst researching other projects that Durbach Block Architects have completed I became very inspired by there regular use of axonometric drawings as a representational tool in presenting there work. I find it interesting how they remove the main structure from the landscape to reveal its surface. Although this technique seems rather simple, I believe it is one of their most effective presentations as it links to their beliefs of creating a building that coexists with the landscape. This has lead me to want to use this technique when it comes time to present my re-interpretation of "The Holman House"

Here are a few examples of some of the projects they have completed using this representational tool.

My Group Member and Chosen Architect/Building

The students in my group for this assignment are:

We have chosen to model "The Holman House" by Architects Durbach Block. This house is located in the Sydney suburb of Doverheights where it hangs over the cliffs edge overlooking the ocean.

"Sited on the edge of a 70-metre high cliff, the plan of Holman House refers to Picasso's painting The Bather. It contains a complex series of fluid living spaces set within a meandering perimeter that arcs, folds and stretches in response to sun, landscape and views. Living and dining areas cantilever out over the ocean, allowing dramatic views up and down the coast. The lower floor forms a base that is built from rough stone walls like an extension of the cliff below. These walls continue along the cliff edge to form a series of eccentric terraced gardens and a vase-shaped rock pool."  (http://durbachblockjaggers.com/)

Final 3ds Max Models used for BuildAR animations.

My BuildAR Box

This is the box that I created for my buildar presentation. Made out of foam core it contains 7 markers all together. The box symmetrical and contains one sliding panel on either side containing 3 markers, and can be opened in the middel to reveal the last marker.

Comic Book style posters

My posters where inspired by comic book layouts to express my idea of a humour and satirical judgement on Gehry's methods and final outcomes in his Architecture.

Inspiration for Posters

Whilst doing a bit of research on graphic layouts I found this website which looks at comic strip layouts, amongst other things. As my 2xA3 posters are going to be displayed using a similar style a found this site very useful!

Week 4 Studio Tasks

Write 300 words reflecting on your project so for, considering what elements of each stage of the design process has made it through to the next, highlighting where the influence for each decision has come from, and spelling out in clear terms each stage of your design process. Concentrate especially on how the work of your chosen designer has helped to lead your design thinking.

The research on my chosen architect, Gehry, along with the six of his projects expanded my knowledge on his style and techniques employed throughout his building designs. This knowledge led me to experimenting in creating my own architecture inspired by the Gehry style. It was whilst doing this that I began to feel a humour involved with his methods, that although have proven to be very successful and constructive, also seem quite cheap and careless.

Whilst thinking of how to turn my Gehry inspired environments and dwelling into 6 BUILDAR markers I aimed to express this playfulness. Thus it was this underlying notion that led me to my final idea of creating a box that represents the playful and somewhat random manipulations of a relatively arbitrary object in the hope of creating an architectural marvel. The box therefore satirically represents Gehrys design process and eventual brief.

When it was mentioned that we are required to create a A3 poster to accompany our AR models I immediately thought of a comic-strip syle layout to tie the two together.

1. Architecture and Inspiration

Creating architecture inspired by my paper model, Gehry's "Peix" scupture and spore creature. The above architecture is more angular and sharp in comparison with smooth, cylindrical architecture below.

DIFFERENT REPRESENTATIONAL STYLES.. EXPRESSION OF IDEA

2 great examples of AR

BMW Z4 AR
This Augmented Reality Example was one of the first to allow you to take an AR model in your hands, place it on your desktop and then control the car from the keyboard and webcam while you drive it around your desk! The AR app also allowed you to save out the graphic you created and share with your friends on facebook & twitter.

Adidas Originals Shoe AR
This Augmented Reality Shoe Example was the most hyped Augmented Reality app ever in the 2 months of teasers to launch date. So far, it probably provides one of the most detailed AR models while combining a lot of functionality and interactivity into the app. However, the downside is it’s so detailed, the the AR app seems to be a little slow (chugs) in the gaming area.

Environment Sketches

Environment 1 -
This environment is intended for "peixy" who I have envisioned to live in a mystical space where  its dwelling would be located on the earth whilst it would scavenge its food beneath the sea. The aim was to create a peaceful, eery environment as I feel this would suit the creature due to its harmless nature and unknown inhabitance.

The image was hand sketched and brought into photoshop where it was re-coloured and tweeked before adding filtered effects.

Environment 2 -
This is a very simple, basic sketch of a city landscape that proposes the idea of bring the creature into a more realistic setting. I have created this image in sketchup and photoshop with the aim of providing a contrasting environment to the more mythical, fantasy world above.

3 New Spore Character Videos - 2 Chosen Creature Images

"Wiley Walt" - A loud and playful creature, "Wiley" roams the earth feeding on virtually anything it can get its hands on. Its vibrant and reflective skin makes it very well noticed.

"Peixy" - This carnivorous creature lives on land but scavenges for food beneath the water. Its sharp and defined skeletal structure as well as its unique skin pigments provides a translucency within its environment. A relatively harmless creature never-the-less its main roles revolve around tracking scraps of left over foods.

"Googly Guggen" - A simple, short minded creature, "Googly" tries as he might is no scary monster. A natural born eater, he's well known for his oddly charismatic shape.
